Player Profile: Duncan McPhie

Duncan McPhie is a Canadian professional ice hockey player, currently playing for the LA Knights of the International Hockey Association.
McPhie was born in Ottawa, ON, but his family moved to Winnipeg, MB, when he was two years old. He began playing pond hockey with his older brother with the neighborhood children around the age of five. He did not formally join a team until he was nine years old. He took on a paper route to help pay for his equipment, league fees, and travel, as the family was very cash-strapped most of the time.

McPhie continued to juggle hockey, part-time jobs, and school until he was drafted into the WCHL. He went to play for the Calgary Raiders; he lived with an aunt and uncle who resided in Edmonton and continued working to pay for part of the costs. His Aunt Geena and Uncle Rick refused to accept the money, and encouraged McPhie to quit his job and focus solely on hockey.

McPhie was drafted into the IHA, fifth overall, by the Chicago Nighthawks, and immediately assigned to their farm team, the Rockford Ice Hogs. McPhie spent two seasons with the Ice Hogs before being traded to another NCHL team, the Tucson Phoenixes. McPhie was eventually called up to the IHA to play for the Phoenix Firebirds.

McPhie’s time with the Firebirds was relatively uninspired, and when his contract expired, they did not resign. McPhie was left to test the free agent market. He eventually signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Falcons. The Falcons traded him to Miami prior to the trade deadline, in exchange for two draft picks and fellow defenseman Ray Speers.

Miami offered McPhie a contract extension, but McPhie was unhappy with how the coaching staff had treated him. Ultimately, he signed with the Dallas Longhorns, on a two-year term. He played one year of the contract, but missed the following season with a concussion. The Longhorns moved his contract prior to the trade deadline, shifting it to the LA Knights in exchange for three draft picks. He signed a contract extension with the Knights the following season.

McPhie has represented Canada at the Junior World Championships and World Championships. He was selected as a member of Team Canada for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
