Profile: Blake Sullivan

Blake Sullivan is a professional hockey player from Saskatoon, SK. He currently plays for the Pittsburgh Rockets of the IHA.

Sullivan has one sibling, an older sister. His father is Gerry Sullivan, who played on Canadian Olympic hockey teams in the 1970s and 1980s. His mother is Holly Sullivan (née Forest), a former tennis player.
As children, the Sullivan siblings played hockey in the winter and tennis in the summer. Both sports appealed to Blake, but when his parents presented him with a choice to continue in only one after his twelfth birthday, he picked hockey.
Sullivan played with the Regina Royals and the Moose Jaw Moose of the WCJHL before being drafted to the IHA by the San Diego Wolves using their second-round pick. Sullivan signed an entry-level contract with the Wolves before the start of the following season. He played well during his first eight games, with a save percentage of 0.98. On November 15,he suffered a broken leg and a separated shoulder during a car accident in San Diego. He was out for eight weeks and returned just prior to mid-season, before tearing his ACL.

Sullivan’s second season started on a promising note when he registered his first IHA shut-out against the Chicago Nighthawks. He subsequently received a blow to the head from Boston defenseman Zdeno Kovac, resulting in a spinal contusion that required surgery. Although surgery was successful, Sullivan contracted scepticemia while recovering. This resulted in additional medical procedures and a lengthy stay in hospital during recovery.
Sullivan’s recovery from surgery and sceptic shock was slow and although the Wolves repeatedly announced their support for him during the season, they traded him to the St. Paul Saints.
Sullivan rose to prominence with the Saints in the two seasons he spent with them, although he was also prone to injury during this time. He won the IHA’s Goaltender of the Year Award. When his contract expired on July 1 that year, he signed with the Pittsburgh Rockets, agreeing to a 3-year, $8-million deal. He has expressed his desire to remain with the Rockets, but he has been unable to reach terms with the team to extend his contract.

International Play

Sullivan was selected to represent Canada at two World Juniors. He was nominated to the Canadian Olympic team, but did not play, citing concerns about a possible back injury.

Personal Life

Sullivan comes from a sports family and has cited both of his parents as inspirations for his hockey career. He lives in Pittsburgh with his dog, a Doberman named Donatello, after his favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Sullivan is a self-professed nerd, claiming that he was bullied in school because he read comic books regularly.
