Player Profile: Erik Bergstrom

Erik Bergstrom is a Swedish professional hockey player. He currently plays for the Pittsburgh Rockets of the IHA.

Bergstrom was born in Gothenborg, Sweden, where he grew up. He was the youngest of four children. His older siblings, Emilia, Linnea, and Axel all participated in summer sports while school was out. Bergstrom remembers that money was always tight in the summer, when his siblings would want to go to day camps, take riding lessons, or participate in summer sports leagues. In the winter, he says, the family had more money, so he picked hockey.

Growing up, Bergstrom wasn’t very good at school. His favorite class was PE, and he hated doing homework. The only way his parents could convince him to do his homework was to entice him with hockey. “We had a bargain system,” he says, “I would have to do my homework, and for every question I answered, I would get five more minutes of ice time.”
Bergstrom played junior hockey and was preparing to move to Uppsala for university to study economics when he was drafted. He said he was surprised and honored to be drafted to play; he had not been ranked very high by scouts. He was drafted in the second round by the Dallas Longhorns. He was assigned to their NACHL affiliate for development. He was called up on occasion.
He was called up just before the trade deadline in his second season and sent to the New Jersey Lions in exchange for two draft picks. Bergstrom played extremely well for the Lions, so much so that when his contract expired in July, he was signed by Dallas on a much larger contract for a term of three years.

Bergstrom played well in Dallas, but mostly went unnoticed. He decided to test the free agency market when his contract expired. He signed a two-year term with the Chicago Nighthawks. Mid-way through his second season, the Nighthawks traded him to the St. Paul Saints.
Bergstrom played well for both teams, but the St. Paul Saints opted not to re-sign him the following July. Instead, he signed a three-year deal with the New York Americans. However, poor play during his final season prompted the Americans to waive him prior to the July 1 free agency period. His rights were acquired by Pittsburgh, who subsequently signed him to a three-year deal.
Bergstrom proved to be a defining player for the Rockets squad, offering veteran presence and leadership, as well as even-handed and steady play. While he was eclipsed by players like Aleksandr Volkov in the highlight reels, his teammates and Pittsburgh fans appreciated Berstrom’s approach to the game.
He became a free agent again following the expiry of the three-year deal; the Rockets were struggling with cap space and Bergstrom’s performance had warranted a raise. He subsequently signed with the Saints on a one-year term. Following that, he was traded to Phoenix, where he signed another one-year contract. He signed with LA the following year, and then with Pittsburgh on a two-year term. His next season is widely speculated to be his last.

Bergstrom represented Sweden in two World Juniors tournaments. He was named to the World Championships team once.
