It’s February already?! How’d that happen?!
It hardly seems like it’s been more than thirty-one days since we said goodbye to 2017 and rang in the new year, but here we are. Let’s take a look back at what’s happened in January. Then we’ll skip forward to what’s coming up in February.
You probably already know the big thing that happened in January: the second volume of the Something in the Water series, Submerged, arrived in eBook format at the end of the month.
January’s a bit of a blur to me because of this. I started the year with about 17k words in the manuscript for Submerged after starting over in December. I’d initially started a draft in August 2017, but after poking away at it, cycling it through a few edits, for months, I was pretty fed up. I ditched it and started with a clean slate.
I managed to push the word count to almost 90k words, then edit, typeset, and proofread it again. (I also tagged up with my lovely proofreader for the final pass). I finished the final edits on January 29, and the book went on sale January 30.
Needless to say, I won’t be doing that again. I’m already working on the next installment in the series, and it’s safe to say there’s been a few tweaks to the planning process.
On Track with Reading
One of my New Year’s resolutions was reading more books in 2018, and so I finally decided to use my GoodReads account. I set myself a goal of twenty-four books to read in 2018, or about two a month. I’m off to a good start, and I hope to keep up the good work in February!
The Return of Slapshot!
Another thing that happened in January was the resumption of regular posting for Slapshot! chapters. Currently, we’re on track to have all the existing chapters posted in March. New content will be arriving after, but you may see a few Slapshot! related things cropping up every now and then.
Since Submerged just came out on the 30th, there’s going to be quite a bit of activity around it for February.
Unfortunately, I had to reschedule the planned Facebook launch party on Saturday, February 3, due to unforeseen illness. I’ve rescheduled it for this Saturday, February 10, from 2 to 3 pm EST.
There will also be a Twitter party on Thursday, February 8. Join in either of these things for free eBooks, signed print copies of Going Under, and Amazon gift card giveaways!
The book is going on sale for Valentine’s Day as well, so keep an eye out for announcements about that!
The Winter Olympics are also coming up! They’re being held in South Korea this year. You may find a few Olympic-based treats cropping up on the site too. I’ll definitely be following along with hockey. Canada won gold in 2010 and 2014, so it will be fun to see if we’re on top again this year—especially with the changes around NHL participation at the Games.
I won’t be rooting for a repeat of the 2014 Sochi games, which saw Canada face-off with Sweden for the gold medal! Who’s a girl supposed to root for?
What sports will you be watching?
Never Miss an Update
There’s also a new Ficsation newsletter, which will include some special treats for subscribers. You’ll get exclusive stories and contests delivered to your inbox on a regular basis. It will be a bit like this: updates, a monthly recap of the best-of, and of course the exclusive stuff.
You’ll also be the first to know about upcoming sales, books, and other fun stuff! Want in on it? Sign up here.
Business as Usual
The other side of my business, the editorial stuff, is doing very well. In fact, we’re growing! I had to hire another editor at the end of January just to keep up. We’re looking for ways to expand, so I’m also going to be looking for ways to balance an expanding workload and growing business with books and blogging. It’s not a bad problem to have, but it will keep me hopping.
Then again, that’s not really any different from normal so … status quo!
What’s on deck for February in the fiction department?
Valentine’s Day is on the 14th, so you can expect a treat then. I’m also hoping to sneak out something feature Sy Tremblay and Aleks Volkov, in honor of the Olympics. Slapshot! will continue to be posted, and I am hoping to (finally) release an eBook of Volume One. It will be free for download.
You can look for the return of more short stories in the near future as I refocus Ficsation’s content again. I’m the writer, you’re the readers, so what do you care about grammar tips and the intricacies of the self-publishing market? Look for Ficsation to start delivering more insights on the stories themselves, sneak peeks at what goes on behind the scenes here, and of course, more stories!
Video Killed the … Blogger?
In line with refocusing on stories and fiction, I’m going to start a once-a-week live video chat. “This Week in Writing” is going to focus largely on an issue or a new fact I learned while working on creating new stories.
There are a million little details and decisions that go into the final book. I have a lot of fun imagining, researching, and creating almost every aspect of my fictional worlds, from the contemporary to the fantastical. “This Week in Writing” should shed some more light on those behind-the-scenes decisions.
Starting Friday, February 16 at 4pm EST, join me for a quick chat on Facebook! The topic will be posted prior to the live session.
Street Teams, ARCs, Beta Readers
More information on this will be appearing in the February edition of the newsletter, but keep an eye out for more developments on this front! If you want to help me create or be one of the first to read an upcoming book, you’re going to have a chance. It’ll be fun, I swear.
